Winemaking Update
ANDY ROBINSON | WINEMAKER
As someone deeply rooted in the world of wine, I’ve always been captivated by how each year tells a story, dictated not just by human endeavor, but by nature’s whims. This year, the tale is one of patience and anticipation. A cooler growing season set us back by about four weeks, a noticeable shift from the norm. To the impatient, this might have seemed like a setback, but for us, it became an extended period of introspection, observing the vines, and marveling at the resilience of nature. And as the harvest finally neared, our patience was rewarded: the fruit, though late, looks nothing short of spectacular. Building on this momentum, it’s with immense pride and excitement that we introduce our latest releases.
Established in 1926, Montafi Ranch Vineyard stands as a cherished relic in the Russian River Valley, a region where many old vine Zinfandel plots have given way to newer plantings. We are now stewards of these venerable Zinfandel vines, which are intermingled in a classic field blend with Alicante Bouschet and other time-honored mixed black grapes. The vineyard’s unique cooler climate and varied planting grant us the privilege of crafting a Zinfandel that reveals a distinct aspect of its multifaceted character: a burst of aromatic intensity, a savory fruit essence, coupled with vibrant acidity and lush tannins. The 2021 vintage featured this month stands out for its exceptional quality.
This month, we are also proud to spotlight our cherished 2021 Marian’s Reserve. Originating in 1975, the late Ed Seghesio artfully co-fermented Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane for his personal enjoyment. By 1983, when the Seghesio family unveiled the first wines under their own name, Ed’s blend was bottled and named in tribute to his beloved wife, Fay Marian. Driven by a desire to both highlight the distinct features of these incredible old vines and honor Fay’s enduring memory, Seghesio resumed crafting Marian’s Reserve in 2004. The wine serves as a tribute to love, tradition, and winemaking excellence.
Rounding off our highlights, we are excited to present the 2021 Saini Zinfandel. Planted in 1926, by the fourth-generation members of the Saini family, this vineyard is among the region’s most tenured vines. The deep bond between the Seghesio and Saini families, spanning over four generations, underscores a mutual passion and commitment to the art of winemaking. Predominantly sourced from the old vine blocks situated on the Dry Creek bench, our Saini Farms Zinfandel thrives on the gravelly clay loam, marked by its striking red hue. This distinct soil composition guarantees exceptional drainage, subtly stressing the vines. The outcome is a wine with remarkable concentration and a robust structure, capturing the essence of the region.
As you savor each of our new releases, know that from our vineyards to your glass, every drop tells a story of dedication and passion. From our family to yours, we cherish the honor of joining your table and celebrations. May this year bring good health, joyous holidays, and treasured moments. We hope to see you one of our events this season.
Salute,
Andy Robinson
