Winemaking Update
ANDY ROBINSON | WINEMAKER
As the vines awaken from their winter slumber here in the picturesque landscapes of Sonoma County, we find ourselves caught in the whirlwind of activity that marks the beginning of another promising year at Seghesio. It’s with a sense of renewal and anticipation that I share with you the results of our dedicated efforts and the exciting developments unfolding within our cellar walls and beyond.
Our team has been tirelessly blending the 2023 vintage wines, a task that demands both art and science, seeking to capture the essence of our terroir in each bottle. The bottling of our 2023 Rosato and Vermentino has just been completed, heralding the approach of warmer days with their crisp, refreshing profiles. In the vineyards, pruning is more than halfway done, a meticulous process that sets the stage for this year’s growth and harvest.
In our last update, we recounted the 2022 vintage’s challenges, from droughts to late frosts, and intense summer heatwaves that led to one of our quickest harvests. Despite these adversities, the resilience of our vines and team effort culminated in wines with exceptional depth and character. We’re excited to unveil our April releases, showcasing the fruits of our perseverance and the unique expressions of our terroir in this challenging yet rewarding vintage.
Our 2022 Old Vine Zinfandel stands as a testament to perseverance, sourced from vines that have weathered the storms of history. This wine is a bold, spicy, and complex homage to the heritage and tenacity of these ancient vines. Similarly, the 2022 Rockpile Zinfandel captures the rugged beauty and unique terroir of this distinctive AVA, offering a wine that’s both powerful and nuanced, with a spicy and juicy profile that promises to evolve beautifully.
In contrast, the 2022 Cortina Zinfandel reflects the challenges of the season, showcasing how adversity can lead to wines of surprising elegance and accessibility. This vintage, while harvested under the duress of heat, presents a more approachable character early on, with a focus on red fruit and a structure that beckons to both seasoned Zinfandel lovers and newcomers alike.
In the vineyards, pruning continues, and our excitement for the year ahead grows. We remain committed to crafting wines that speak of place, heritage, and the steadfast spirit of our vineyards. Your continued support and enthusiasm for our path enriches our endeavor, and we can’t wait to share the results of this year’s dedicated efforts with you.
Salute,
Andy Robinson
